{"id":1233,"date":"2003-01-26T11:09:06","date_gmt":"2003-01-26T11:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/houseofnehesipublish.com\/sxm\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2015-05-17T11:10:13","modified_gmt":"2015-05-17T11:10:13","slug":"new-book-of-st-martin-plays-already-being-studied-in-two-literature-courses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/houseofnehesipublish.com\/sxm\/2003\/01\/26\/new-book-of-st-martin-plays-already-being-studied-in-two-literature-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"New book of St. Martin plays already being studied in two literature courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GREAT BAY, St. Martin<\/strong>\u00a0(January\u00a026, 2003) \u2014\u00a0<em>The House That Jack Built and Other Plays<\/em> by Louie Laveist is now required reading for students of the University of St. Martin (USM) and the Creative Writing Program (CWP).<\/p>\n<p>News of the book\u2019s publication was made public here nearly two weeks ago, \u201cBut\u00a0<em>The House That Jack Built<\/em> has already made a piece of book history before its scheduled February 1 launch,\u201d said Jacqueline Sample, president of House of Nehesi Publishers. \u201cThis is the first time that a St. Martin book published by House of Nehesi has been ordered for use in academic courses before it reached the public\u2019s hands through the book party or bookstores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the book could be in bookstores by early this week, the collection of Laveist\u2019s three original plays is already in the hands of the CWP 25 participants, who will study Laveist\u2019s work as part of the \u201cIntroduction to literature\u201d section of their 6-month course.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, USM\u2019s undergraduate literature class was set to begin thumbing through\u00a0<em>The House That Jack Built.<\/em> \u201cWe are using\u00a0<em>The House That Jack Built and Other Plays<\/em> along with other serious titles to introduce literature in a critical and relevant way to USM students,\u201d said university instructor Rhoda Arrindell, who reviewed the book before selecting it for her class of nearly 20 students.<\/p>\n<p>When Laveist was told by his publisher of the early progress of his first book at a recent book-launch planning session, the surprised playwright\/director\/actor could only manage to say, \u201cI can\u2019t believe it.\u201d Meanwhile, according to plans for the book party, the guests could be the ones to be surprised and left speechless with some of the direction and dramatization of selections from the three plays in the book. Some of St. Martin\u2019s leading actors and actresses will perform at the February 1 book party, said Sample.<\/p>\n<p><em>The House That Jack Built and Other Plays <\/em>contains\u00a0<em>Who\u2019s Fooling Who?<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Forbidden Love<\/em> and the title play\u00a0<em>The House That Jack Built<\/em>, considered by critics as one of Laveist\u2019s best plays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GREAT BAY, St. Martin\u00a0(January\u00a026, 2003) \u2014\u00a0The House That Jack Built and Other Plays by Louie Laveist is now required reading for students of the University of St. Martin (USM) and the Creative Writing Program (CWP).
