{"id":1287,"date":"2003-11-02T12:28:55","date_gmt":"2003-11-02T12:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/houseofnehesipublish.com\/sxm\/?p=1287"},"modified":"2015-05-17T12:29:46","modified_gmt":"2015-05-17T12:29:46","slug":"st-martin-was-well-represented-at-capnet-conference-in-curacao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/houseofnehesipublish.com\/sxm\/2003\/11\/02\/st-martin-was-well-represented-at-capnet-conference-in-curacao\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Martin was well-represented at CAPNET conference in Curacao"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Marigot\/Great Bay <\/strong>(November 2, 2003) \u2014 A group of six people represented St. Martin at the Caribbean Publishers Network (CAPNET) second International Conference on Publishing in the Caribbean, from October 28 to 31, at the luxurious Kura Hulanda Hotel in Cura\u00e7ao.<\/p>\n<p>The group, which worked together as a virtual delegation, was composed of Josianne Fleming and Rhoda Arrindell, University of St. Martin president and literature instructor respectively; House of Nehesi Publishers projects director Lasana M. Sekou and newly published author Fabian Badejo; and Conscious Lyrics Foundation president Shujah Reiph and project adviser Joy Reiph-Arnell.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Conscious Lyrics newsrelease, Arrindell and Badejo were panelists at the \u201cSpecial focus on the Dutch Caribbean\u201d work session. In her paper on language and teaching a national literature, Arrindell strongly dismissed the term \u201cDutch Caribbean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the USM instructor, \u201cWhile the theme for this session is focus on the Dutch Caribbean, I would like to say, I have never taught of myself as being Dutch, \u2026 and I would like to unapologetically dismiss the notion of the Dutch Caribbean in general and specifically the notion of a Dutch Windward Islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Badejo read from his essay \u201cPublish and be blessed,\u201d found in his new book\u00a0<em>Salted Tongues \u2013 Modern Literature in St. Martin<\/em>\u2014which is available at bookstores and libraries in St. Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight for the St. Martiners and certainly a highpoint of the CAPNET conference was the book launch program on Wednesday, October 29 for\u00a0<em>Salted Tongues<\/em> published by the House of Nehesi and\u00a0<em>Haiku in Papiamentu<\/em> by Elis Juliana, published by The University of Alberta Press.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jay Haviser in his keynote address for the St. Martin title called\u00a0<em>Salted Tongues<\/em> \u201cmedicine for the universal soul of Caribbean writers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The theme for the three-day conference was \u201cGlobalization and Caribbean Publishing: Challenges and Opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marigot\/Great Bay (November 2, 2003) \u2014 A group of six people represented St. Martin at the Caribbean Publishers Network (CAPNET) second International Conference on Publishing in the Caribbean, from October 28 to 31, at the luxurious Kura Hulanda Hotel in Cura\u00e7ao.
