ST. MARTIN (November 27, 2003) — The Philipsburg Jubilee Library will host a practical serenade of words, ideas, stories and languages here on Saturday, November 29, 2003, said Shujah Reiph, president of the Conscious Lyrics Foundation (CLF).

The Saturday soiree is the second of three weekends of activities celebrating the library’s 80th anniversary as St. Martin’s first modern library for the general public.

Some ten readers will recite short selections of adult and young people’s literature from classic and contemporary books, and from published and unpublished works in English, Papiamentu, Dutch, Spanish and French, said Reiph.

The selections of poetry, fiction, prose non-fiction, drama, and literary criticism, will be drawn from the works of authors such as Maryse Conde, Changa, Federico Garcia Lorca, Illis Juliana, Fabian Badejo, CLR James and Loeki Morales.

The readers will also reflect a range of folks, including authors and unpublished writers such as Papa Umpo, Dr. Maria van Enckevort, Joe Dominique, Clara Reyes, Lyzanne Charles, Chantal Williams, Fabian Badejo and Changa.

The 80th anniversary reading will not only highlight the wide range and quality of books in the Jubilee Library collection but the lively state of writing developing in St. Martin and “the love of the culture for languages and a good story,” said Reiph.

This weekend’s anniversary organizing team is headed by CLF and includes Philipsburg Jubilee Library and House of Nehesi Publishers.
